O’Sullivan and Hilliard provide a concise and clear explanation of the law with plenty of useful references to more niche cases and further reading for students looking to get extra marks. Meanwhile, for an in-depth examination of the key cases in any area, you cannot go wrong with McKendrick. The Concentrate series of books are useful for revision and acquiring a basic overview of a topic, but cannot substitute a proper textbook.

Criminal Law

Smith and Hogan’s Criminal Law is one of the longest running and most respected student textbooks, and for good reason. It provides a deep and rich understanding of the topic in easily digestible form. Herring provides a handy case-book to help you identify the relevant cases in criminal law and sink your teeth in. This book also provides an overview of the key academic literature in the area, to help you get higher marks.
